IN THE LIGHT

1 JOHN 1:7If we walk in the light, as He is in
the light the blood of Jesus Christ
His Son cleanseth us from all sin.

IN THE LIGHT

God with us, Emmanuel,
True Light delivered in the dark;
The Way, The Truth, The Life,
Breathes the scent of blood and pain.

Ahead of us the Shepherd,
Walks with rod and staff;
Warning, watching, waiting,
Calling each of us by name.

Behind us the Savior,
Bleeds and dies on a cross;
Suffering, searching, saving,
Releasing His spirit from the pain.

Pure, holy, undiminished,
Filtered of everything evil;
Hope and peace and joy,
Abound on every pathway.

J. E. P.122608

PLACED IN THE LIGHT
If we walk in the light, as He is in the light
the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanseth us from all sin.

1 John 1:7

To mistake conscious freedom from sin for deliverance from sin by the
Atonement is a great error. No man knows what sin is until he is born
again. Sin is what Jesus Christ faced on Calvary. The evidence that I
am delivered from sin is that I know the real nature of sin in me. It
takes the last reach of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, that is, the im-
partation of His absolute perfection, to make a man know what sin is.

The Holy Spirit applies the Atonement to us in the unconscious realm
as well as in the realm of which we are conscious, and it is only
when we get a grasp of the unrivalled power of the Spirit in us that
we understand the meaning of 1 John 1:7, "the blood of Jesus Christ
cleanseth us from all sin." This does not refer to conscious sin
only, but to the tremendously profound understanding of sin which
only the Holy Ghost in me realizes.

If I walk in the light as God is in the light, not in the light of my
conscience, but in the light of God - if I walk there, with nothing
folded up, then there comes the amazing revelation, the blood of
Jesus Christ cleanses me from all sin so that God Almighty can see
nothing to censure in me. In my consciousness it works with a keen
poignant knowledge of what sin is. The love of God at work in me
makes me hate with the hatred of the Holy Ghost all that is not in
keeping with God's holiness. To walk in the light means that
everything that is of the darkness drives me closer into the
centre of the light.

BEHOLD!

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Behold the newborn Babe,
Delivered in a dirty feeding trough;
Brought to bear life the Spirit's way,
Now held tenderly by a mother's love.

Behold the missing Boy,
Found teaching in a synagogue;
A tone of true conviction in His voice,
As He went about the business of God.

Behold the obedient Man,
Baptized by John in the Jordan;
The Answer to Our Father's promise,
To offer peace and joy to every human.

Behold the perfect holy Lamb,
Our only blameless, faultless sacrifice;
Surrender your heart to the great I AM,
Behold your Savior the Lord Jesus Christ!

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Just a few more days until December 25th - just a few more days
until... until what? What exactly is December 25th? What is this
day we call Christmas?

The early church didn't give much thought to the birth of Jesus.
Of the four Gospels only Matthew and Luke even mention His
birth, and these accounts are relatively brief. Certainly, the
emphasis of the Gospels was on Jesus' ministry, death, and
resurrection. And after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the focus of
the church was on living for Him, sending out His message, and
waiting for His return.

No one is really sure when Jesus was born. The first recorded
celebration didn't occur until 200 years after His birth, and it
wasn't until 330 A.D. that the birth of Christ was assigned to
December 25th. Some say Jesus was actually born in September
or October and others are sure He was born in March or April;
in fact, a case has been made for His birth in each of the twelve
months. But it's generally agreed that, due to the relatively
colder weather, December was an unlikely time for the birth of
our Savior. So what really is this day we call Christmas?

John 1:1,14
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made His
dwelling among us."

These verses refer to Jesus Christ as "the Word" who was with
God in the beginning and at the same time was God Himself.
Jesus then left His Heavenly dwelling to begin life with us as a
little baby.

Christmas is a day to remember the most profound event in the
history of the world. On that first Christmas night (whenever it
was), God came to earth to live among us! He was born into the
most humble circumstances, grew and taught us His truths, died
on a cross for our sin, and was raised to be with The Father - all
so we might live with Him for eternity.

December 25th is a day to celebrate with quiet reflection, as Mary
"treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart
(Luke 2:19). It is also a
day to celebrate with great rejoicing, as
the shepherds "returned, glorifying
and praising God for all the
things they had heard and seen" (Luke 2:20).
The world has tried
to remove Christ and insert many activities into this season
which do not glorify God. But this need not hinder our worship.
We have the ability to turn away the evil and embrace that which
is honoring and good.

We can (and should) glorify God and celebrate the gift of our
Savior every day throughout the year. But let's take the opportunity
to make this season and this day special. Let's celebrate with a
focused and thankful heart, and make December 25th a blessed
day of remembrance.

Have a Christ Centered Day!

THE JOY. . .

OF LETTING GO!

White knuckles grabbing grace,
Hoarding love for sunny days;
Hiding seed that should be sown,
We miss the joy of letting go.

Open palms accepting grace,
Sharing love on rainy days;
Planting seed that should be sown,
We find the joy of letting go!

THE MIRACLE

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those
who love Him, who have been

called according to His purpose.

THE MIRACLE

It will all get done,
Before the end comes;
What Our Father began
He will finish.

It'll all be made right,
Just as Jesus said it would,
As He assured His disciples
Here on Earth.

We will all be perfected,
Just as the Lord promised;
When we believe in The Miracle
Of new birth.

Don't worry your head,
Don't weary your heart;
What Our Father began
He will finish.

Trust In The World

Trust in the world with all your heart,
And lean not on the Lord Jesus at all;
You will be in darkness never to rise,
Never to know unblemished Sonshine.

Trust in the world with all your mind,
And turn not from its empty promises;
You will sit alone in fear and worry,
Never experiencing peace w/o hurry.

Trust in the world with all your soul,
And learn not the truth of God's Word;
You will stay ignorant of perfect love,
Never surrendering to the Lord Jesus.

Trust in the world with all your strength,
And leave not the selfish ways of youth;
You will grow old distraught by regret,
Never accepting the grace our God sent.

Trust in the Lord with all of your being,
and Do not depend on your own understanding;
You'll begin to comprehend how your life should be,
As you trust in the world Christ alone keeps you free.

The Path to Straight
Margaret Manning

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your ownunderstanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5 were some of the first Scripture verses Imemorized as a child. For some reason, the words seemed to bounce withjoy, energy, and a sense of lightness as I learned them. For me, thesewere very "happy" verses in Scripture-verses that seemed to indicate God's direct guidance for all his children down happy, straight pathways. I inferred that trusting in God's guidance would be the result of seeing the wonderful, straight pathways laid out before me that I wouldwillingly and gladly walk on towards all my goals, desires, and dreams.While these are still precious Scripture verses to me, I have come to understand them differently as an adult. I recognize now that trustingthe Lord was easy when everything was going my way! I didn't rely on my own understanding because I didn't have to! But, when dreams began to die, life-goals went unmet, and desires dried up, I realized the challenge these verses really offer; they offered me the opportunity to learn thereal meaning of "trust." "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding" took on new meaning in the face of absence, want, and unfulfillment. Real trust in the Lord is only forged out of the fires of testing--testing that reveals whether we truly trust in the Lord or in what we want the Lord to give us. In other words, do we trust the Provider, or the Provider's provisions? In my own life, when it seemed that God withdrew the "provisions" and things stopped going my way, my plans failed, or my goals and dreams didn't materialize, I began to realize that my trust was in my own understanding of what was necessary to make my paths straight. So, as God had abandoned my plans, my test of trust began. C.S. Lewis once wrote in his marvelous book The Screwtape Letters that in order for the believer to mature in faith and trust, God must withdraw "all the supports and incentives" and "leave the creature to stand up on its own legs--to carry out from the will alone duties which have lost all relish." He continues this thought through the character of Uncle Screwtape, the senior demon coaching his nephew Wormwood on the skills of devilry: "It is during such trough periods, much more thanduring the peak periods, that it is growing into the sort of creature He[God] wants it to be. Only then, when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy's [God's] will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys."(1) You see, when our paths are crooked we are tempted to place our trust in the things God provides. As God withdraws those supports we have the challenge of leaning on our own understanding (grasping for things), or allowing true trust in the Lord to develop and bloom (grasping for God). As we trust God even while feeling lost and abandoned to crooked, twisting, and unsafe paths, paths that we thought would lead us to our plans, dreams, and desires, only then can we follow the ever-straightening path to our heart's desire found in God alone. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight." As you find yourself wandering down crooked paths of disappointment, may you find God leading you to place your trust in Him alone. As your trust grows, may you see straight paths of rest and contentment unfold before you. As you release your own understanding, may you find the Lord to be your heart's desire. --Margaret Manning is associate writer at Ravi Zacharias International Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia.(1) C.S. This week's devotional thought...

Guilt and Grace by Max Lucado

Sometime ago I read a story of a youngster who was shooting rocks with a slingshot. He could never hit his target. As he returned to Grandma’s backyard, he spied her pet duck. On impulse he took aim and let fly. The stone hit, and the duck was dead. The boy panicked and hid the bird in the woodpile, only to look up and see his sister watching. After lunch that day, Grandma told Sally to help with the dishes. Sally responded, “Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen today. Didn’t you Johnny?” And she whispered to him, “Remember the duck!” So, Johnny did the dishes.What choice did he have? For the next several weeks he was at the sink often. Sometimes for his duty, sometimes for his sin. “Remember the duck,” Sally’d whisper when he objected. So weary of the chore, he decided that any punishment would be better than washing more dishes, so he confessed to killing the duck. “I know, Johnny,” his grandma said, giving him a hug. “I was standing at the window and saw the whole thing. Because I love you, I forgave you. I wondered how long you would let Sally make a slave out of you.” (Steven Cole, “Forgiveness,” Leadership Magazine, 1983, 86.) He’d been pardoned, but he thought he was guilty. Why? He had listened to the words of his accuser. You have been accused as well. You have been accused of dishonesty. You’ve been accused of immorality. You’ve been accused of greed, anger, and arrogance. Every moment of your life, your accuser is filing charges against you. Even his name, Diabolos, means “slanderer.” Who is he? The devil. As he speaks, you hang your head. You have no defense. His charges are fair. “I plead guilty, your honor,” you mumble. The sentence?” Satan asks. “The wages of sin is death,” explains the judge, “but in this case the death has already occurred. For this one died with Christ.” Satan is suddenly silent. And you are suddenly jubilant. You realize that Satan cannot accuse you. No one can accuse you! Fingers may point and voices may demand, but the charges glance off like arrows hitting a shield. No more dirty dishwater. No more penance. No more nagging sisters. You have stood before the judge and heard him declare, “Not guilty.” From In the Grip of Grace Copyright (W Publishing Group, 1996) Max Lucado

THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTITUDE
by Charles R. Swindoll-Philippians 2:3-5

This may shock you, but I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my successes or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me, or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. The attitude I choose keeps me going or cripples my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hope. When my attitudes are right, there’s no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me. Yet we must admit that we spend more of our time concentrating and fretting over the things that can’t be changed than we do giving attention to the one that we can change, our choice of attitude. Stop and think about some of the things that suck up our attention and energy, all of them inescapable: the weather, the wind, people’s action and criticisms, who won or lost the game, delays at airports or waiting rooms, x-ray results, gas and food costs. Quit wasting energy fighting the inescapable and turn your energy to keeping the right attitude. Those things we can’t do anything about shouldn’t even come up in our minds; the alternative is ulcers, cancer, sourness, depression. Let’s choose each day and every day to keep an attitude of faith
and joy and belief and compassion. Take charge of your own mind!

Today's Promise:

He Gives the Victory

"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57, KJV).

In our busy lives, yours and mine, there are days when victory
seems an impossibility. Heartaches, trials, burdens, or just the
ordinary cares of the day, all seem foreign to the idea of being
victorious. And yet the fact remains that we are "more than
conquerors" even when we do not feel like it. God graciously
allows His children to be human and to express our doubts
and fears when suffering and pain and testing and trial
seem to overwhelm us.
"I have to be very honest," confessed Joyce Landorf,
well-known Christian author and speaker, during a long
period of illness. "One of the things I have learned from
severe pain is that I have felt totally abandoned by God.
I didn't think he'd let that happen to me, but He has. "
And maybe the feeling of abandonment when pain is at
its writhing best.. maybe that's what makes it so sweet
after the pain goes and the Lord says,
'I was here all the time.

I haven't left you. I will never forsake you.'

Now those words get sweeter to me because I know
what it has felt like to not feel His presence." We do
not have all the answers, but we know one who does.
And that is where our victory begins - acknowledging
(1) that God is a God of love, one who never makes a
mistake, and (2) he will never leave us or forsake us.

Bible Reading: Romans 7:18-25

TODAY'S ACTION POINT:

I will consider myself a victor, whatever may
transpire, because I serve the victorious one.

Into His Hands

A life lived by fully trusting God begins with a simple faith in the forgiveness offered through Jesus. But this simple faith will grow as we apply it to the varied and difficult circumstances which inevitably come our way. Not many of us begin with the faith of Peter; "Lord, if it's You, tell me to come to You on the water" (Matthew 14:28). Rather, we cautiously test the water by trusting God in small areas of our life. But as we see His promises hold true and witness the blessings of walking in obedience, we ought to begin to step with greater confidence and trust Him more and more.

Prior to crossing into the promised land, Moses told the people of Israel: "Do not be afraid, for the Lord goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). This is one of the many promises which remain with us today. As we walk with God into the land of promise - the land of contentment and peace - we must learn to truly apply these promises and consistently live by them. He is RIGHT THERE! And He wants us to live with the contentment of knowing He is in control.

But full trust is difficult! Every day we are bombarded with things which attempt to pull us away from God and steal our joy. Though He is walking right beside us, and absolutely nothing catches Him by surprise, we seldom even think of Him during our day. This should not be! If we are truly His child, we are being called to trust Him with ALL and allow Him to live in and through us - this is the life He desires us to live.

We must continually believe the truth of His Word and allow our faith to mature by taking steps which lead us closer to God - even if our steps of faith seem small. With each new step, we will more clearly see the truth of God's promises. We will begin to see past the visible garbage of this world and begin to gaze with wonder on "Him who is invisible" (Hebrews 11:27). The life of contentment and peace is the life of total commitment and surrender.

Psalm 31:5 "Into Your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth."

What part of our life are we holding back from God? If we really believe He created the Universe and sent His Son to die for the forgiveness of our sin so we can spend eternity with Him in Heaven, isn't it foolish for us to think we can do a better job of controlling ANYTHING? If we trust Him for our eternal destiny, shouldn't we trust Him for the much more trivial matters of our daily life? Our God is VERY capable and He CAN be trusted! Though it may not seem as dramatic a step as Peter's, we are all being called out of the boat. We are being called to believe and trust with all our heart. Let's not allow another day to go by without fully committing our body, soul, mind and spirit, our absolute all and EVERY area of our life, into His hands.

Have a Christ Centered Day!
